Tile Making

April 4 - May 23 (8 Weeks)
Saturdays, 10am-1pm

Teacher: Ezra Schweitzer (they/them)

Discover the art of tile making in this fun and informative class! We’ll explore various techniques for creating both functional wall tiles and decorative pieces. Students will learn how to develop their tile surfaces with texture, hand-painted designs, and geometric patterns. With a small class size of just six students, you'll receive personalized guidance to bring your tile ideas to life. This course is open to all skill levels, from complete beginner to experienced artist.

Beginner Wheelthrowing & Handbuilding

April 6 - May 25 (8 Weeks)
Mondays, 6-9pm

Teacher: Daniela De Jesus (she/her)

In this beginner class, students will explore both wheelthrowing and handbuilding techniques. We’ll cover the basics of using the potter’s wheel as well as rolling slabs and coil building methods. With a small class size of up to six students, we’ll guide you through altering forms with both additive and subtractive techniques, trimming, experimenting with different surface treatments, and glazing. Ultimately, students will learn how to combine different techniques to make their clay visions come to life. This course is open to all levels, from complete beginner to experienced artist.

Continuing with Clay

April 7 - May 26 (8 Weeks)
Tuesdays, 6-9pm

Teacher:
Ezra Schweitzer (they/them)

So you’ve learned the basics of ceramics, now what? This class is designed for those with ceramics experience looking to improve their skills, learn new techniques, and create in community. During the first class, students will decide what they’d like to learn and we will create a class schedule as a group based on this discussion. Class time is intentionally left open-ended and flexible to accommodate for changes, review, and further discussions. Students are encouraged to come to class with project ideas and techniques they’d like to see demonstrated, or would like support in their exploration of.

Prerequisite:
Students must have some ceramics experience to join this class. Students do not need previous experience at House of Dirt, but should have a basic understanding of the ceramic process. We will not be spending time on foundational wheelthrowing skills such as centering and trimming, so students who desire to make work on the wheel must be comfortable with those skills already. Students who would like to make work using handbuilding techniques are not required to have previous wheelthrowing experience.
